Yanco Delta Wind Farm

Yanco Delta Wind Farm, proposed by ViRYA Energy, would comprise a 1.5-gigawatt wind generation project and 800-megawatt battery, to be located in the South-West Renewable Energy Zone (REZ) in NSW. The scope of the works includes:

  • up to 208 wind turbines to maximum tip height of 270 metres
  • an 800-megawatt battery energy storage facility (the proponent has not specified the battery's duration capacity)
  • grid connection infrastructure
  • wind monitoring masts, and
  • a central primary substation and up to five collector substations.

Debt Finance: Origin Energy

Origin Energy has entered into an agreement with Virya Energy to acquire its Yanco Delta Wind Farm. The purchase price and development expenditure prior to commencement of construction will be funded from Origin’s corporate debt facilities. The consideration consists of an upfront payment of $125 million to Virya Energy and an additional variable payment of up to $175 million conditional on the project achieving certain development milestones.

Apr 2022 A scoping report for the project was published alongside a request for the Secretary's Environmental Assessment Requirements (SEARs).
May 2022 SEARs were issued for the project.
Jun 2022 Supplementary SEARs were issued for the project.
Nov 2022 The NSW Department of Planning and Environment placed the project's Environmental Impact Statement on public exhibition, closing 15 December.
Dec 2023 The project received planning approval from the NSW Government.
Feb 2024 The project received Commonwealth environmental approvals.
Apr 2024 Origin Energy entered into an agreement with Virya Energy to acquire the Yanco Delta Wind Farm.
